The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's swallow-tailed flag, which was established in 1587 following the unification of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, is the earliest recorded flag of the region of the Ukraine. Under Austrian Empire rule, the flag of the Habsburg monarchy was flown in Ukraine beginning in 1772.
The contemporary yellow and blue bicolor was developed in 1917 for the Ukrainian People's Republic as a result of a revolution. When the Soviets invaded Ukraine in 1919, this freedom was short-lived and Ukraine became the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The original flag was altered to a straightforward red flag with gold sans serif letters reading "Y.C.C.P." in the upper left corner.
The flag was altered three more times while under Soviet rule. After the Ukrainian SSR joined the UN, the flag was finally decided upon in 1949 as a red field with an off-center gold hammer and sickle with a five-pointed star and a thick horizontal blue line in the lower half of the flag.
The Soviet Empire's dissolution in 1992 led to the official adoption of the current State flag of Ukraine. The Ukrainian People's Republic's yellow and blue bicolor was chosen. On many public structures, it is also hung vertically.
